On January 14 the Prince George’s County voted to move forward the 100% Clean Energy Resolution to a second reader (which will happen on February 11).  We are excited for the progress and very thankful to Board Members Boozer-Strother and Jackson for introducing the resolution and for the unanimous support from the Board of Education to move this to a second vote.  We are also thankful to the students at Eleanor Roosevelt High School that submitted video testimony and will be sharing those testimonies on our social media.

You can watch the vote if you missed it here:

On January 14 at 7PM the Prince George’s County Board of Education will be introducing the 100% Clean Energy Resolution for a first reading. As of writing multiple students have submitted testimonial videos in support.

You can watch online to the discussion on Zoom:

You can read submitted to the Maryland Public Service Commission calling on the denial of a permit in case 9330 that would result in construct of a new natural gas pipeline that would come within a half mile of Brandywine Elementary School in regards to a call to action from our friends at Clean Air Prince George’s.

On Tuesday October 13, the Prince George’s County Council Committee of the Whole is voting on CR-100-2020, which is a resolution to approve a contract that will result in a public-private partnership to build six new schools (replacements for Drew-Freeman, Hyattsville, Kenmoor and Walker Mill middle schools in addition to an new Adelphi area middle school and a new south county kindergarten through eighth grade school).

At this point there is not clear whether these schools will be 100% Clean Energy.  This is important because the useful life of school buildings is quite long and the buildings and much of the equipment being installed will still be in use in 2050, when we need to be at net zero emissions in order to stave off the Climate Emergency.

We need you to TESTIFY or WRITE A COMMENT saying that you want these schools to be 100% Clean Energy.

You can easily sign up to both HERE.

If you need inspiration your can read our testimony.

We represent the Sierra Club’s Climate Parents in Prince George’s County. Sierra Club’s Climate Parents is a diverse national movement of parents and families mobilizing for bold clean energy and climate solutions. The specific campaign involves getting school districts around the country to commit to 100% Clean Energy. We are leading that charge in Prince George’s County.

If achieved these goals will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, make school environments healthier, and in many cases, save money in the long term.

And now we have a website to help get the word out.
